Special Olympics in Malolos - Philippines

Thirty (30) children and other individuals with special needs gathered at the gymnasium of the Holy Spirit Academy of Malolos on April 28, 2008, to participate in the Special Olympics organized by the students of the Professional Course in Special Education of the College of the Holy Spirit of Manila (CHSM).  The participants of the said olympics were students of Punla Development Center in Cainta and Santa Isabel Elementary School in Malolos where the organizers go for their practicum.

The sports events included, among others, variations of 10-meter relay, 50-meter walking, standing-long jump, color-and-shape matching contest.  The organizers also showed their skills in playing volleyball in an exhibition game.

The Special Olympics aimed (1) to recognize the skills in sports of children and individuals with special needs; (2) to build the confidence and self-esteem of children and individuals with disabilities; and (3) to develop and enhance their motor skills through various sports.   It also served as a culminating activity for the students taking up the Professional Course in Special Education, a new curriculum being offered by CHSM to train educators in the area of Special Education and prepare those who would like to minister to individuals with special needs. The course is available for professionals who are currently employed since classes are on Sundays, but anybody may enroll as long as he/she is able to meet the requirements for enrollment.

The activity gave the participants a sense of accomplishment since each of them went home with a prize.  On the other hand, the organizers went home with a sense of joy and meaning for having been able to help our sisters and brothers with special needs.
